If Your Wifi System Disconnects for a Minuite Do You Have to Reset the Arlo to Conect Again

I recently upgraded my Wi-Fi to a mesh network with a set of eero mesh Wi-Fi routers because I planned to expand my smart home with more devices and automations.

I set up the system, following Eero's every instruction and, after thoroughly going through their manuals, added all my devices to the network.

The mesh system ran well for the first few weeks but started to disconnect randomly.

My automations were also affected whenever this happened, especially the ones I used IFTTT to set up.

I had to get to the bottom of why my routers were having problems staying connected because it didn't just affect my internet use but also caused problems with my smart home.

I went to Eero's support pages and visited their user forums to learn more about the issue.

With the help of some friendly people online, and some trial and error, I managed to stop my eero from randomly disconnecting for good.

The research that I had done has been compiled in this guide and should help you fix your Eero routers if they keep disconnecting for apparently no reason.

To fix your Eero that is disconnecting randomly, try power cycling your Eero. Then, check if your internet connection is still active by checking your gateway.

You can also try turning on Bridge mode, which I will walk you through on how to do later in the article, along with how to place your Eero and its nodes, how you can reset your Eero and what resetting entails.

Power Cycle Your Eero

If your eero is disconnecting randomly, you can first try turning the Eero off and turning it back on again.

This could fix issues with the router if it were caused by a setting change since a soft reset or a reboot like this can reset those settings back to normal.

To power cycle your eero:

  1. Turn off all the Eeros on your network.
  2. Unplug them from their wall adapters.
  3. After waiting for a minute or two, plug the routers back in.
  4. Turn the routers back on.
  5. Let the network reestablish itself.

After all routers turn on, and the network comes back, wait and see if the Eero randomly disconnects again.

Check Internet

If the Eero network doesn't turn off completely, but you can't use the internet with it, the chances are that your internet connection is at fault here.

Check your modem, see if all the lights are on, and make sure none of the lights are orange, amber, yellow, or red.

If its any one of these colors, your modem has issues connecting to your ISP's servers.

To try fixing this, restart your modem, and after the modem comes back on it restarts, make sure all the status lights on the modem are green.

If its still a warning color, contact your ISP to let them know of the issue.

CheckCables

If you have devices connected to the Eero or its nodes through their ethernet ports, check those cables.

You should also check the cables that go from your modem or gateway to your Eero and make sure they fit right.

Check the end connectors of the cables, as well as the ports they are plugged into.

Clean them of any dust that might have accumulated there.

If you want to replace or upgrade your ethernet cable, I'd suggest the Dbillionda Cat8 Ethernet Cable.

With its gold plated end connectors, durability almost becomes a non-issue.

Put Your Gateway in Bridge Mode

Most gateways that you lease from ISPs have in-built routers so that you don't need to get any extra equipment to get Wi-Fi at home.

But Eeros act as replacements for your router and are best used when the gateway doesn't need to act as a router.

Bridge mode lets you do precisely that and turns off the Wi-Fi in your gateway, and passes the internet connection to your main Eero.

To turn on Bridge mode for your gateway:

  1. Connect a device to your gateway, either through Wi-Fi or using an ethernet connection.
  2. Open a web browser on that device and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  3. The router admin tool will now load up. Input your username and password. You can find the default username and password underneath the gateway on a sticker or in its manual.
  4. Find the option to turn on Bridge mode. Consult your gateway's manual to find out where it is. Some ISPs can remotely activate bridge mode for you if you contact them and ask for it.
  5. Disconnect all devices from the gateway's LAN ports after turning Bridge mode on.
  6. Connect your main gateway eero to LAN port 1 and turn the eero on.

You can no longer use the gateway to connect devices to it using ethernet unless you set up a gigabit switch.

To reconnect some devices to the Eero again, forget the network from the device and connect to it again.

When I tried bridge mode on my Xfinity connection, I couldn't get connected to the internet.

This is a known issue and if you are on an Xfinity connection and you run into connection issues, try configuring the gateway again.

After enabling bridge mode, wait to see if the Eero disconnects on its own again.

Place Your Eeros Better

An Eero mesh Wi-Fi system uses multiple satellite routers that work with the main Eero router to expand how far your Wi-Fi network can reach, and the placement of the satellites or nodes of your Eero system matters a lot as a result.

Positioning the router, especially in a two-storied house, should be done to maximize effective communication between the base Eero and all its satellites.

Incorrect positioning can cause random disconnects in areas with a poorly placed Eero node.

Try placing your node Eeros halfway between your primary gateway Eero and the area where you need Wi-Fi.

Place them on a flat, hard surface like tabletops, nightstands etc.

Eeros and their nodes send their signal mostly upwards and on the plane that they are placed in, so make sure you put them somewhere halfway between the ceiling and the floor.

Place the satellite Eeros in relatively open areas where their signals won't get obstructed much, and avoid small, enclosed spaces.

Whenever possible, make sure all Eero routers have a line of sight with each other.

If its not possible, try placing them where the barriers between them like walls or partitions are thinner and have little to no metal in them.

Hard Reset the Eero

If you have placed your Eero in the best place possible but are still running into random disconnection issues, try resetting the eero.

Doing a hard reset can remove all network settings and configurations, wipe all logs and remove the device from the network.

If you reset the gateway or primary Eero, the entire network will be removed, so keep these in mind before going for a hard reset.

To hard reset your Eero:

  1. Find the reset button on the back of the router or underneath it.
  2. Press and hold the button for at least 15 seconds until the LED flashes.
  3. Release the button to begin the reset.
  4. When the reset finishes, the LED will flash blue.
  5. Set up the Eero again like you did when you set it up for the first time.

After doing a reset, wait and see if the Eeros randomly disconnect.

Contact Support

If none of these steps works for you, or if you run into issues troubleshooting your Eeros, feel free to contact Eero support.

You can also get in touch with them if you run into any issues later down the line.

They can tailor fixes that fit your setup more and give you more specific fixes that you can try.

Final Thoughts

Replacing your modem is also something you can try, but I would only advise you to do it if there is no alternative.

Look for modems that work well with Eero to ensure you get the best one possible for Eero.

Turn on Eero Secure for your Eero system as well to control access to your network.

If the disconnects were caused by someone unauthorized on your network, Eero Secure could protect you from them.
